Cushing Library Opens Exhibit

Intended for All: 125 Years of Women at
Texas A&M

The history of women at Texas A&M is chronicled in an exhibit, "Intended for All: 125 Years of Women at Texas A&M," that will open at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, in the university's Cushing Memorial Library and Archives. A brief program will begin at 3:30 p.m. The exhibit, part of the university's celebration of Women's Spirit Month, details the achievements, contributions and history of women at A&M from 1876 to the present. "Women have always been at Texas A&M, as students, relatives, staff and faculty.  This exhibit uncovers a forgotten and quite surprising tradition of women and their important role throughout Texas A&M's history," explained Steven Escar Smith, Wendler Professor and interim director of Cushing Memorial Library.  Among the women who will be featured in the exhibit are Mary and Sophie Hutson, twin daughters of Dr. Charles W. Hutson, who attended Texas A&M in 1899.  Their older sister, Ethel Hutson, attended in 1893 and worked on the first yearbook, the Olio, published in 1895.  For more information, contact Steven Smith at 845-1951.
