Cushing Library and University Press Sponsor Book Exhibit and Lecture

Beginning March 25, an exhibit of outstanding books selected for the 2001 Association of American University Presses Book, Jacket and Journal Show, will be held in the Mayo-Thomas Room at the Cushing Memorial Library. The exhibit will be open through April 12th, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and most Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The exhibit is sponsored by Texas A&M University Press and the University Libraries.

This exhibit offers anyone interested in books an extraordinary opportunity to handle, compare, and appreciate fine examples of the art and standards of bookmaking. A selection of recent and award-winning books published by Texas A&M University Press will also be featured at the exhibit.

In conjunction with the exhibit, an illustrated lecture on the importance, standards, and techniques of effective book design will be given on April 8, at 4:00 p.m. in the Mayo-Thomas Room of the Cushing Memorial Library. The lecture is also sponsored by Texas A&M University Press and the University Libraries, in association with the Center for Humanities Research and the Friends of the Sterling C. Evans Library.

The featured speaker will be Richard Hendel, associate director and design & production manager of the University of North Carolina Press. Hendel has consistently won top awards from the American Institute for Graphic Arts, the Association of American University Presses, and Print Magazine. One of the most influential and well-respected book designers in the university press community, he is author of On Book Design, recently published by Yale University Press.

A reception will follow the lecture.

The annual AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal Show recognizes excellence in design and production by its 121 member presses. It is a forum for sharing design, production, and manufacturing techniques that benefit the books and their readers, that use processes and materials imaginatively, that show appropriate concern for quality and attention to detail, and that accomplish all these things within the constraints of budgets and schedules.

Limited numbers of the exhibit catalog, which contains comments by both designers and the show's distinguished jurors, as well as specifications and sample illustrations, will be available at the exhibit for a nominal charge.

In all, 325 books, 389 jackets and covers, and 7 journals were submitted by member presses for consideration in this year's book show. The jurors' charge was to select approximately 50 books, an appropriate number of journals, and 30 jackets that best represent excellence in design and production.

For further information, call the Cushing Memorial Library at 845-1951. Classes that would like to visit the exhibit are requested to make reservations to ensure availability.
