William Lempriere

Lempriere, William, d. 1834.

A tour from Gibraltar to Tangier, Sallee, Mogodore, Santa Cruz, Tarudant; and thence over Mount Atlas to Morocco: including a particular account of the royal harem, etc. The 2d ed., with additions and corrections. London : Printed for J. Walter, 1793.

Lempriere was a surgeon at Gibraltar. In 1789, he was called to Morocco to treat the emperor's favorite son. This work narrates his travels and contact with the Moroccan people, focusing, understandably, on medical knowledge. Also included is a section on his visits to the emperor's harem, where Europeans were not usually allowed, and where he had to overcome enforced modesty and seclusion in order to treat the women there.

The text begins with a detailed map of the Empire of Morocco.
