The project concerns the origins
and growth of oceanography in the United States, and it examines the development
and expansion of the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and Woods
Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Associate Professor of History and the former oral
historian, Robert Calvert, received a grant from the Office of Naval Research
and National Science Foundation and interviewed fifty-five oceanographers and
administrators. All tapes are open, and some are transcribed.
