Miscellaneous Tapes 
and Transcriptions

   The collection contains almost three hundred miscellaneous tapes and transcriptions which are not oral history: over thirty tapes of commencement exercises, dedication ceremonies, and Aggie Musters; almost fifty tapes collected by John Q. Anderson concerning folk medicine and music; four short transcriptions about the folklorist, J. Frank Dobie; long interviews with science fiction writer Chad Oliver, artist E. M. (Buck) Schiwetz, and cattleman Fred A. Sommers; interviews with about ten people who use the Wendish vocabulary; sixty tapes of various sessions of the 1985 Texas A&M International Water Conference; and numerous tapes of the college of Liberal Arts faculty meetings, 1972-1985. All are open.

    In addition, there are a number of interviews on various topics which are oral histories, and the Slave Narratives, which are listed at the end of this section. Unless indicated, all are transcribed and open.

Bean, Alan
   Astronaut on Apollo 12 as Lunar Module pilot, November 12-24, 1969, and Commander of the Second Skylab Mission, July 28 - September 25, 1973. Interviewed by Kimberly Cunningham, November 7, 1981. 26 pages.

Becker, Bob
   Head of Space Station Orbital Operations, NASA, discusses his work on all of the manned space projects, from Mercury to the current Space Lab. Interviewed by Allison Seale, March 11, 1985.

Boruffi, Vic
   Peace Corps volunteer in Peru from 1971 to 1974 where he introduced improved rice variety for the local farmers in the Santa Valley. Interviewed by Jamie Holder, November 13, 1984. 6 pages.

   Son of Vice-President George Bush. Discusses growing up, career, and relations with father and mother: Vice-President's ideas and mother's strengths. Interviewed by Jane Marie Pine, February 20, 1982. 12 pages.

Crippen, Robert L.
   Astronaut for Skylab 2, 3, and 4 missions, and Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) mission, 1975, discusses the Columbia, and women and blacks in NASA. Interviewed by Paul E. Stine, April 12, 1982. 10 pages.

Eddy, John P.
   Served as a state legislature during the 1950's, campus minister at Mankato State College (Mankato, MN) during the late 1950's and early 1960's. Attended the March on Washington, 1963. Currently a professor of Higher Education at North Texas State University. Discuss involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. Interviewed by Mark Eddy, April 7, 1985.

Farkasfalzy, Denis
   Hungarian revolution by a participant and bystander. Gives mood of revolt in 1956 and tells of influence of Radio Free Europe. Interviewed by Michael Burns, November 20, 1982. 11 pages.

Friesen-Carper, Dennis
   Member of the Unification Church, 1973 to 1975, and of the New Hope Singers who accompanied Rev. Sun Myung Moon. Deprogrammed in November of 1975, he discusses Rev. Moon, the Church, and its membership. Currently, music director of the First Christian Church in Houston. Interviewed by Sonya M. Chesky, April 20,1985. 22 pages.

Green, Gilbert
   Discusses his experience as a communist during the McCarthy era. Author of the books What's Happening to Labor, The New Radicalism, and The Enemy Forgotten. Indicted and convicted for conspiring to teach communism. Went underground for 4 1/2 years, then went to prison for 8 years. Interviewed by Michele McManus, November 23, 1985. 21 pages.

Grieves, Thomas-John

Guerrero, Francisco J.

Leslie, John D.
   Discusses the National Area Development Institute from 1963 to 1986 with a focus on the Spendeltop program in Kentucky. Interviewed by John Wolvoord, May 8, 1994. One tape. Indexed.

Mann, Woodrow
   Mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas, when nine black students were intergrated into white Central High School in 1957, which began the "Little Rock Crisis." Involvement of the National Guard, state and federal officials, and actions of local inhabitants are included with clippings and photographs from local newspapers. Miller, Mary Aimee Trouart

McCandless, Bruce II
   Selected to the NASA program as an astronaut in 1966. On February 7, 1984, became first man to walk in space un-tethered using the Manned Maneuvering Unit which he helped design. Graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958. Interviewed by Sue W. Cutcomb, November 3, 1984. 23 pages.

Nagy, Gabor Imre Jr.
   Life in Hungary, the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and his flight to America in 1957. Interviewed by Katherine Maze, November 24, 1990. One tape. Indexed.

Owens, William A.
   A noted folklorist, author and educator. Director of Research in Folk Materials (1941) and Director of the Oral History of Texas Oil Pioneers (1952-1958) at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. Director of the Summer session (1959-1969) and Dean of the Summer Session (1969-1972) at Columbia University. During World War II served in the U.S. Army, receiving the Legion of Merit Award. Twenty-four tapes of Owen's music, plus a four-hour interview concerning his life and writing by Robert A. Calvert. October 5, 1982. Not transcribed.

Rogers, William B. Rev.
   Presbyterian campus minister to the Hampton Sydney College, Prince Edward County, Virginia in the early 1950's, and at North Texas State University in the late 1950's. Served on the National Council of Churches in the Division of Higher Education. Discussed involvement in the Civil Rights movement, especially integrating public schools. Wilkinson, Frank
   Civil libertarian discusses his role in integrating housing in Los Angeles during the 1940s, the House Unamerican Activities Committee, McCarthyism in the 1950s and being "blacklisted," losing his job, prison and his case before the U.S. Supreme Court Wilkinson v. USA, 1958), the FBI, and developing the NCARL. Interviewed by Terry Anderson, April 17, 1986, 60 pages.

Yarborough, Ralph W.
   U.S. Senator from Texas, 1957-1970. Career at the University of Texas Law School, Texas State Teachers' Association, Texas State Board of Law Examiners, Assistant Attorney General of Texas, 1931, and Chairman of the Labor and Public Welfare Committee, 1969.
