    Johann Holtz, who was born in Tondern in 1875, won a scholarship to study at a state-supported academy. Later he studied in Karlsruhe and the Julian Academy in Paris. He painted in Berlin for ten years. His last years were spent in Schleswig-Holstein where he conducted a school for artists.
