Henry Louis Gurlitt

The Krissaien Valley in Greece

Henry Louis Gurlitt (1812 - 1897), brother of composer Cornelius Gurlitt, has been called "the first healthy, realistic landscape painter in Germany . . . one who opened the eyes of a number of young painters who have since become famous." He was especially noted for his landscapes of the South. His works have been exhibited in many national galleries on the continent, and in 1865, when it was purchased by the Duke of Oldenburg, he received his highest award and price for his painting of Keller Lake in Holstein.

The Krissaien Valley, in Southern Greece on the northern shore of the Gulf of Corinth, was in ancient times sacred to the Delphic god and was forbidden to be cultivated. A town now nearby is known as Amfissa, near Mt. Parnassos (el. 8061 ft.).
